U.S. intelligence agencies have issued warnings about targeted disinformation efforts from Russia as the presidential election approaches.
In a joint statement, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the FBI, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency attributed two fabricated videos to Russian influence actors.
One video falsely depicted individuals claiming to be from Haiti voting illegally in multiple counties in Georgia, while another video accused a member of the Democratic presidential ticket of accepting a bribe from entertainer Sean “Diddy” Combs.
Reports indicated that the latter video suggested Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband received a $500,000 bribe from Combs.
Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, whose office oversees elections in the key swing state, denounced the video about illegal voting in Georgia, labeling it as “targeted disinformation” and calling for its removal. Raffensperger urged social media companies, including X, owned by Elon Musk, to take down the misleading content.
The anonymous account that originally posted the videos had previously been flagged for suspected Russian disinformation.
