Over 90 schoolgirls at Eregi Girls High School in Kenya’s Western Region have been struck by an undisclosed ailment, which health authorities in the country are currently looking into. The students have described having trouble walking and experiencing knee pain.
Senior Ministry of Education officials visited the school on Tuesday to reassure worried parents that the situation is being controlled and that other pupils would continue to attend regular lessons.
“The education department, county government, and public health department are committed to ensuring the children receive appropriate treatment,” said Jared Obiero, the regional director of education.
The affected students’ blood, urine, and stool samples have been submitted to labs in Nairobi, the country’s capital, and Kisumu, a neighbouring city. Later today, definitive findings regarding the illness’s cause are expected.
