Mokwa Flood Update: Niger Govt Recovers 153 Dead Bodies

The Niger State Government announced on Sunday the recovery of two additional bodies from the recent flood disaster in Mokwa Local Government Area, raising the death toll to 153.

This was disclosed in a statement issued in Minna by the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman.

He confirmed that as of June 1, 2025, the total number of fatalities stands at 153.

The statement said, “This unfortunate disaster has affected numerous homes and individuals, and the government remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting affected families and communities.

“The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), in collaboration with local authorities and volunteers, continues to work around the clock to provide relief to the affected people.”

The statement added that while the government shares in the pain of every family that has been affected, “we urge members of the public to remain calm and sensitive in their communications, particularly on social media and other platforms.

“This is a time of mourning and collective grief for us as a state as spreading unverified or sensational information only adds to the sorrow and confusion already being experienced.”

The government urged all citizens to cooperate with the appropriate authorities and place their trust in the ongoing response efforts.

Additionally, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) appealed to all Nigerlites to uphold unity, show compassion, and focus on accurate reporting during this challenging period.
