Authorities in the United States have arrested 36-year-old Nigerian woman, Gbemisola Akayinode, on charges of felony murder following the death of her 9-year-old daughter, Oluwasikemi Akayinode, who died after being left inside a hot car for an entire workday.
According to police reports, Gbemisola Akayinode drove to her job at a mineral plant in Galena Park, near Houston, Texas, on July 1, 2025, with her daughter in the back seat. She reportedly parked her Toyota Camry around 6 a.m. and began her shift, leaving the child inside with a small bottle of water and the windows slightly rolled down.

Authorities said Akayinode also placed a sunshade across the windshield to block visibility inside the car. When she returned at about 2 p.m., she found her daughter unresponsive and called for help.
Paramedics performed CPR before rushing Oluwasikemi to Harris Health Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide caused by hyperthermia (heatstroke).

Weather reports show that temperatures in the area reached 96°F (35°C) that day, meaning the interior of the car could have soared to over 160°F (70°C) within hours.
Police said Akayinode faces charges of felony murder and child endangerment and is being held at the Harris County Jail on a $1 million bond. Court documents also revealed she had previously left her child unattended in a vehicle on four separate occasions.
Health experts have urged parents to never leave children alone in vehicles, emphasizing that even a few minutes in extreme heat can lead to tragedy.
