US to Redesignate Yemen’s Houthis as Global Terrorist Organization

The Biden administration is set to re-designate the Houthis as a terrorist organization.

This comes amid strikes by the Houthi groups targeting ships that are linked to Israel, the group has vowed to target American and British ships in the Red Sea after both countries participated in strikes against Houthi targets over the past weeks.

The move would reverse the earlier decision made by the State Department in 2021 to remove the SDGT designation and de-list the Iran-backed Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO).

Asked whether the U.S. would re-designate the Houthis as an FTO on Tuesday, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the administration was “still in the process of reviewing” the matter.

Biden has said in a statement that he considers the Houthi group a terror organization.

The Houthi group has been engaged in a civil war with the Saudi-backed government in Yemen since 2015.

There has been a peace process to end the Nine-year war, but there are fears that recent regional issues due to the spillover of the Gaza war, will affect the peace process.

Re-designating the Houthis as a terror organization will have an impact on the Houthi-Saudi peace plan.
