The United States Bureau of Arms Control, Deterrence, and Stability has emphasized the pivotal role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in fortifying the Nigerian military’s capabilities and minimizing inadvertent bombings.
Following an unfortunate incident on December 3, 2023, where the Nigerian military mistakenly bombed civilians while pursuing terrorists in Kaduna State, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Paul Dean, unveiled plans to integrate AI technology.
This initiative aims to distinguish between civilian populations and armed adversaries, thereby significantly reducing the risk of accidental civilian casualties.

Speaking at a roundtable meeting with select journalists in Abuja on Thursday, Dean expressed condolences for the tragic event and underscored the potential of AI to enhance military operations.
The deployment of AI, he noted, not only promises improved operational efficiency but also serves as a crucial measure to ensure compliance with international humanitarian law, preventing military actions from violating established norms.
