United States President Donald Trump has said that the US “will take over” the Gaza Strip to level it and rebuild the area.
Trump made this known on Tuesday during a joint press conference alongside his Israeli counterpart Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The President has before now suggested he doesn’t think there is a permanent future for Palestinians in contested area.
He said he could see the US in a “long-term ownership position” of Gaza, which, according to him, would likely bring stability to the Middle East.
“The US will take over the Gaza Strip and we will do a job with it too.
“We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site, level the site and get rid of the destroyed buildings,” Trump said.
The President lamented that the Gaza Strip has become “a symbol of death and destruction for so many decades and so bad for the people anywhere near it.”
On his part, Netanyahu stressed that he has three goals, one of which is to make sure that Gaza never poses a threat to Israel again.
He lauded Trump’s tenacity and ability to think outside the box.
