USWNT Legend Megan Rapinoe Retires from National Team

The United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) legend Megan Rapinoe has retired from playing for the US national team.

On Sunday, the 38-year-old was celebrated as she took her final bow from international football, playing her final game in a friendly match against South Africa in the Soldier Field stadium in Chicago.

Rapinoe bows out with much respect and admiration. Winning an Olympic gold medal in 2012 and two consecutive World Cup titles, in 2015 and 2019, has placed her among the greatest footballers to ever represent the USWNT.

The 2019 Ballon d’Or winner with 63 goals in 203 caps for her national team will play her last National Women’s Soccer League game on October 6. Speaking after the game against South Africa that ended two goals to nil in favour of her team, Rapinoe says, “It has been an honour to wear this shirt, play with all these players, and live out my childhood dream.”
