Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu has highlighted the completion of Kashim Shettima’s residence, costing N21 billion, as a key achievement of his administration.
Despite economic challenges, Tinubu stated that the project demonstrates his commitment to accountability, transparency, and the efficient use of resources.
Represented by Kashim Shettima at the commissioning of the new edifice on Friday, he emphasized that finishing abandoned projects is in the public’s best interest.
The project, which started under former President Muhammadu Buhari with an initial N14 billion, was completed by Tinubu’s administration.
He stated, “As we commission this state-of-the-art edifice as the official residence of the Vice President, we are fulfilling a longstanding commitment and reaffirming our unwavering dedication to accountability, transparency and efficient utilisation of resources for the betterment of our nation.
“I hold a very strong opinion that abandoning projects after substantial expenditure have been incurred is inherently wasteful, and it is in the best interest of the Government and the public to see them through to completion,” Tinubu added.
However, the president faced criticism on social media for spending billions on the residence amid widespread economic hardship.
The inauguration coincides with the Nigerian Labour Congress and affiliate unions demanding a minimum wage increase due to rising food prices and inflation, exacerbated by Tinubu’s policies, including the removal of the fuel subsidy.
