The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, stated that he could not afford to pay his driver’s N100,000 salary due to the economic hardship in the country.

He made this remark at a public event, which was captured in a viral video.

The statement has left Nigerians puzzled, especially given the widespread corruption within the current administration, of which Akume is a top cabinet member.

He said in the video, “I can’t afford to pay my four drivers N100,000 monthly salary.”

Reacting, @emmofie tweeted, “You can’t pay someone that literally has your life in their hand 100k? When you have billions stacked in different accounts? Omo.”

“Come to think of it His salary is way more than 20m not even Talking about the allocations and other money he is receiving. But he can’t afford to pay his driver’s 100k per month,” @GallantDaletian.

“How many drivers does a public officer of a Nigerian ministerial equivalent in the US, UK, or Canada have? This is an example of the unnecessary bogus lifestyle of public officers that leads to huge costs of governance that we’re clamouring it should be cut! What does he need four drivers for? Does he work or live inside the vehicles on the road 24/7? Cut it to two and give at least 150k each. One active, one extra, or they switch roles at intervals,” @Jeremiadetunji tweeted
