Landmark Beach Workers Protest as FG Begins Sand Filling for Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road

Workers of Landmark Beach Resort in Lagos’s Oniru area have launched a protest as the federal government initiated sand filling of the beachfront for the construction of the coastal highway.

Demonstrators, bearing placards reading ‘#SaveLandmarkBeachResort’ and ‘Save Our Jobs,’ voiced their opposition through chants.

Minister of Works Dave Umahi earlier this month assured that the project’s impact on Landmark facilities would be minimal. Umahi affirmed that only the shoreline might undergo alteration.

But with the commencement of sand filling, the resort staff expressed fears of job insecurity and voiced their grievances against what they perceived as a threat to the existence of their workplace.

According to the owners, the Landmark site in Victoria Island is home to over 80 businesses that create over 4,000 direct jobs.

The tourism company also expressed fear that the accelerated sand filling on the Landmark shoreline has caused widespread panic and fear to the independent businesses, suppliers, employees, investors, financiers, and clients that all conduct business within the Landmark Ecosystem. Landmark Group urged the Federal Government to reroute about 1.5km of the road project.

The tourism company said if the road project is not rerouted, all 80 businesses operating within the Landmark ecosystem will undoubtedly be affected.
