Vigilante Members Arrested for Allegedly Torturing Man to Death in Abia

Tragedy struck in Osisioma Ngwa Local Government area of Abia State as two members of the Mbutu/Umuojima Vigilante, Onyebuchi Ukandu and Emmanuel Onyebuenyi, were apprehended by the Abia State Police Command for their alleged involvement in the death of Alex Ukaegbu.

Ukaegbu, who managed a building site in Osisioma, fell victim to the actions when they reportedly chained him and demanded a ransom of N50,000 for his release. The incident unfolded on November 30, and despite negotiations, Ukaegbu tragically lost his life while still in the custody of the vigilante group.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, the incident was reported on December 1, leading to a response by police operatives. The lifeless body of Ukaegbu was later deposited at Alanwemadu Mortuary Osisioma for preservation.

Chinaka stated, “The vigilante allegedly chained him in their office and were negotiating his release for the sum of N50,000. Unfortunately, Alex Ukaegbu died while in their custody.” The arrested vigilante members, Ukandu Onyebuchi and Emmanuel Onyebuenyi, are now in police custody.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
