The West African Elders Forum (WAEF) has appealed for a peaceful voting process during the forthcoming general elections in Liberia.
After a first term marred by accusations of corruption and an economic slump, President George Weah is seeking a second term in office.
Politicians and other interested parties were asked to abstain from violence and commit to a peaceful general election on Tuesday by the WAEF Election Mission to Liberia.
The call was made in a statement released in Liberia’s capital city of Monrovia on Sunday following the conclusion of the election campaign.
According to the constitution, President Weah, who assumed office in 2018, is qualified to run again on October 10.
He has stated his determination to seek development, growth, and peace despite the fact that his previous term was tainted by corruption allegations and a recession.
But some voters have expressed dissatisfaction over his failure to raise living standards or combat corruption and a burgeoning drug issue among impoverished adolescents.
After the United States levied sanctions on them for corruption last year, Weah sacked his Chief of Staff and two other top officials.
