The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that it will be adopting the Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode for the conduct of the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) starting from February 2024.

The announcement was made in a statement signed by the acting head of Public Affairs Unit of WAEC, Moyosola Adesina, on Monday.

The statement said that the new innovation will kick off with the conduct of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates in February 2024.

“In line with global best practices, the Nigeria National Office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) wishes to inform the general public and all its stakeholders that it has concluded plans to migrate its WASSCE for Private Candidates Examination Diets from Paper and Pencil Test to Computer Based Examination (CBE),” the statement read in part.

The adoption of CBT for the SSCE is a significant development in the Nigerian education sector as it is expected to improve the efficiency and transparency of the examination process, as well as reduce the risk of cheating.

The CBT mode of examination has already been adopted for other major examinations in Nigeria, such as the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)

WAEC has said that it will provide adequate training and support to candidates and schools to ensure a smooth transition to the CBT mode of examination.
