The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State, Alwell Asiforo Okere, has congratulated the people of the state on this year’s Democracy Day. During his speech, Okere declared that the PDP is operating a “shadow government” to ensure the current administration is held accountable.
Okere emphasized that the PDP established the democratic foundation that Abia now enjoys. The party, which ruled Abia for 24 years before losing power, claims to be committed to monitoring and criticizing the present government led by Alex Otti.
In a statement made by the Deputy Chairman and Acting Publicity Secretary, Abraham Amah, the PDP vowed to uphold transparency and accountability. Amah said, “As a party, we are dedicated to upholding transparency and accountability in the conduct of government business.”
Amah also mentioned the recent suspension of the Abia State Commissioner for Health, attributing it to the PDP’s push for transparency. “We reiterate our pledge to run a shadow government that will diligently scrutinize the actions of the current administration, holding them accountable for their promises and commitments to the people at all times,” he stated.

The PDP claims it will closely monitor the government’s actions, pointing out any shortcomings. “Abia PDP remains vigilant and steadfast in our mission to serve the good people of Abia State with integrity and honesty. We stand ready to champion the interests of the citizens and advocate for a government that prioritizes the well-being of all at all times,” Amah added.
The PDP’s promise to act as a watchdog comes after its long tenure in power, which was marked by mismanagement. Despite this, the party insists it is focused on ensuring good governance and transparency under the new administration.
