The Chairman and CEO of United Nigeria Airlines, Obiora Okonkwo, has called on the National Assembly to intervene in addressing the issue of multiple taxation in Nigeria’s airline industry.
Speaking at a recent event, Okonkwo revealed that airlines are charged over 18 different taxes on a single ticket, a burden he described as unsustainable for both carriers and passengers.
His comments come days after the Nigerian Senate summoned the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, on Monday to provide explanations on the challenges confronting the aviation sector.

Lawmakers are reportedly investigating the rising cost of air travel, regulatory hurdles, and financial pressures facing airlines across the country.

Okonkwo urged the National Assembly should help take immediate action to simplify the taxation structure on air tickets, stressing that doing so would not only relieve airlines but also make air travel more affordable for Nigerians.
He added that reforming these taxes could stimulate economic activity, boost tourism, and strengthen the overall sustainability of the aviation industry.
