“If Alliance Between PDP, LP Will Bring Better Nigeria, We Will Back It,” Abure Says Amid Atiku Hinting at Stepping Down for Peter Obi in 2027

The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has announced its readiness to support any alliance that promises to enhance the nation’s welfare.

Abure-led faction of the Labour Party stated that Peter Obi has not yet disclosed the outcomes of his recent meetings with political allies in Abuja.

Labour Party chairman Abure, in an interview on Saturday, stated that he could not confirm the details of the discussions because Obi had not briefed him.

The media circulated viral photographs of Obi’s closed-door meeting on Monday with three prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party: former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Governor of Jigawa State Sule Lamido, and former Senate President Bukola Saraki.

This marked the first engagement between the former Anambra State governor and his former political associates since his defection from the PDP to the Labour Party in May 2022.

Abure emphasized that the party had no concerns about the potential impact of these meetings, noting that Obi is free to interact with associates and friends across party lines in the country.

Speaking with PUNCH, Abure said, “You know it is difficult to confirm anything at this stage until we see the character and shade of the alliance. So I am still waiting for Obi to discuss it with me. But whatever is the case, we are fine. If it is an alliance that will lead to a better country, why won’t we back it?

“It is Obi’s nature to generally visit people. Whether in the Labour Party or not, he has a lot of friends. His friends cut across party lines. Recall that he once visited Wole Soyinka too. So I see his meeting with Atiku as one of such visits, which may not necessarily have political undertones.”

When asked whether he would approve a potential alliance between the PDP and the Labour Party for the 2027 presidential election, Abure stated that it wasn’t his decision to make.
