The Labour Party (LP) has pledged to prevent “reactionary forces” from taking control of the party.
LP spokesman Obiora Ifoh made this statement while rejecting the possibility of a merger.
In response to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)’s call for rebranding to facilitate a potential merger or coalition, Ifoh emphasized that while the LP remains open to partnerships for future elections, it is not considering a merger.

In a communique issued after its meeting, the congress directed the national administrative council (NAC) to “take immediate steps, which may include rebranding, merger, or forming coalitions to defend the interests of NLC and Nigerian workers in the party with a view to reclaiming the party and returning it to its original ideological roots.
“The congress will not allow the Labour Party to be hijacked by reactionary forces who do not represent the aspirations of the working people and broader Nigerian people.
“The NLC remains committed to ensuring that the party remains a true vehicle for the emancipation of Nigerian workers and the oppressed masses.”
Ifoh said the LP “remains open to collaborations aimed at strengthening its position ahead of future elections”.
