“What is Life of a Nigerian Worth?” — Netizen Cries Out Over Brutal Attack by Drunk Police Officer

A disturbing allegation of police brutality has emerged from Abuja, as a Nigerian woman, @torty_mercy, took to her verified X account to share how her brother was assaulted by a police officer near Wuse Market on Sunday, May 25.

According to her, the incident occurred near Zenith Bank at Wuse Junction after a church service. She claimed the vehicle her brother was in had stopped briefly when a police officer confronted the driver and attempted to seize the steering wheel. “My brother was coming back from church, driver packed along Wuse Market junction, opposite Zenith bank, a police officer approached the driver as he was about to move and started dragging the steering with him, people in the vehicle started pleading…”

She recounted that the officer, visibly intoxicated, suddenly walked to the window where her brother was seated and spat on him without provocation. “This guy left the steering, came round the vehicle and spat on my brother sitting by the window unprovoked!”

The situation escalated when her brother stepped out of the car to ask why he was targeted. The officer allegedly began beating him with a stick, ignoring pleas from his colleagues who, she said, made no real effort to stop the violence. “His colleagues were asking him to stop but did absolutely nothing to stop or restrain him, instead they were asking my brother to run, someone who recently had an accident and can’t even walk fast.”

She also revealed that the officer struck her brother multiple times, including on his injured leg, broke his glasses, and attempted to destroy his phone. “This police man broke his glasses, repeatedly tried to smash his phone, hit him on his bad leg repeatedly.”

She raised concerns about the officer’s erratic behavior, saying he smelled of alcohol and appeared unstable. “This police officer was smelling of alcohol and obviously didn’t act in his right mind. What would have happened if he had a gun? We will record another loss from police in a space of days?”

The emotional post has since sparked outrage online, with many calling for accountability from the Nigeria Police Force. The victim’s sister tagged the official accounts of the Nigerian Police (@PoliceNG), FCT Zone 7 Command (@NPFZoneviiAbuja), and spokesperson @Princemoye1, demanding urgent action. “Someone will go to church and come back injured or in a body bag because we are Nigerians? What is the life of a Nigerian worth?”
