Senate President Godswill Akpabio recently advised Nigerians to take advantage of any free food they come across.
His remark was made during a plenary session in the Senate, as seen in a video where he and his colleagues laughed after the comment.
This advice comes at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with severe economic challenges, exacerbated by policies under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, including the removal of fuel subsidies.
Recently, Nigeria’s state-owned oil company, NNPC Ltd, raised petrol prices by over 15%, marking the second price hike within a month, as the government moves away from fuel subsidies that it says have strained the country’s finances. In some areas, petrol is now being sold for over N1,000 per litre.
This isn’t the first time Akpabio has made similar remarks. At a July conference in Port Harcourt organized by the Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities, Youths and Women Group, he mocked Nigerians planning to protest against economic hardship, joking that he and other lawmakers would be “eating” while protests took place.
