The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has drawn mixed reactions after celebrating his son Jordan’s graduation with a Master of Laws (LLM) degree from Queen Mary University of London, UK, despite previously criticizing the practice of sending students abroad for courses available in Nigerian universities.
In a resurfaced video on X, Wike had questioned the need for Nigerians to pursue degrees in fields like English, Economics, or Law overseas, arguing that Nigerian universities have “very good faculties” in these areas.
He said, “Why do I have to send somebody who wants to study law overseas? If I’m sending you overseas, it must be in very clear areas where we lack capacity, such as certain branches of engineering, medicine, agriculture, or ICT.”
However, on Tuesday, Wike shared his joy on X (formerly Twitter) over his son’s academic achievement.
“Happy to witness, alongside my wife, the graduation ceremony of our son, Jordan, who just earned a Master of Laws (LLM) degree at Queen Mary University of London, UK,” he wrote.

He added, “As a father, I am happy for the progress Jordan is making in the pursuit of his career.”
The celebration also featured Wike’s wife, Eberechi Wike, a legal professional and newly appointed Justice of the Court of Appeal, who was sworn in during July 2024.
