The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has denied claims of a secret deal with President Bola Tinubu to secure the 2023 presidential election.
Wike made this statement during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Friday night, dismissing the allegations as baseless.
The former Rivers State Governor said, “I never had any bargain with Mr. President before I supported Mr. President.” His remarks come after months of speculation over his support for Tinubu, despite being a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Wike’s decision to back Tinubu and his subsequent appointment as the Minister of the FCT after the Tinubu’s inauguration on May 29, 2023, had led to rumors of a possible agreement between the two.
During the 2023 election, Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ‘G5’ group, had refused to support the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, alongside Seyi Makinde, Okezie Ikpeazu, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and Samuel Ortom, who all were then his fellow governors.
This fueled further speculation of a rift within the PDP and questions about Wike’s political alliances.
