In what amounts to a political snub, the Martins Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly has overridden Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s veto and passed the Rivers State Local Government Bill into Law.
The bill, which was initially sent to Fubara for approval on March 13, 2024, was denied by the governor. However, the Amaewhule-led Assembly reintroduced it and successfully pushed it through.
According to a statement released to newsmen, the bill was thoroughly debated by members before its passage.
In addition to passing the bill, the Amaewhule-led lawmakers also confirmed nominees for the positions of chairman and members of the Assembly Service Commission. Among the confirmed nominees are Sampson Worlu as chairman, along with Abinye Blessing Pepple, Blessing Belema Derefaka, Gbaranen Robinson, and Madam Dorcas Amos as members.

Furthermore, the Amaewhule-led Assembly is actively pushing for local government elections to be conducted before the expiration of Fubara’s tenure. Despite this, the governor has yet to make any official statement regarding the local government elections.
