Workers at Ogun Polytechnic Begin Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Salaries

The staff of MAPOLY have gone on an indefinite strike over unpaid salaries and other issues. The strike began on Thursday and has disrupted academic activities on the campus.

Some students who came for lectures on Thursday said they had to go back home because there were no lecturers to teach them. They said they might go back to their parents’ homes if the situation persists.

The workers’ unions in MAPOLY held their congresses on Wednesday, where they decided to embark on the strike. They accused the Rector, Dr Adeoye Odedeji, the management and the Governing Council of neglecting their welfare.

They said they had written several letters to the management, urging them to prioritize their welfare, but they were ignored. They appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to intervene and pay their July, August and September salaries.

The ASUP Chairman, Tomisin Adegunle, said the workers would not resume work until their demands were met. He said they were worried about their future, as their deductions had not been paid and some of them would retire soon.

The PRO of MAPOLY, Yemi Ajibola, confirmed that the workers were on strike, but said they did not inform the polytechnic officially. He said the workers knew that the polytechnic was broke and could not afford to pay salaries.

He said the polytechnic’s financial situation worsened after JAMB reduced its admission quota from over 10,000 students per session to less than 4,000. He urged the workers to dialogue with the management and find a solution.
