Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has taken aim at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, accusing the government of neglecting essential infrastructure responsibilities in many areas of Abuja while still demanding ground rent from residents.
In a series of posts on her official X account on Friday, Yesufu recounted personal efforts to bring basic amenities like roads, electricity, and water to underserved communities, projects she believes the government has failed to deliver.
“Can someone tell Wike that the infrastructure that government is supposed to do in most places in Abuja have not been done?” she asked.
Yesufu said she had invested heavily in community development, citing examples such as installing streetlights, connecting electricity, laying water pipes, and providing transformers in areas ignored by the government.
“The money I have spent to do roads that government should have done, the number of poles I have used to bring electricity to an area government failed to take electricity to. Plus the pipes I laid to take water to an area where government failed is way more than any ground rent I am supposed to pay,” she said.

She also expressed frustration at how the benefits of such projects are shared by residents who made no contributions, only to later claim that the infrastructure belongs to the government.
“The most annoying part is that you will ask others to contribute they wouldn’t but when you connect these infrastructure they will come and use it and tell you that an individual can’t own it. It belongs to government. But government no bring the money wey dem take buy the poles and wire carry electricity there,” she added.
Yesufu’s remarks come amid rising tensions in the FCT over Wike’s aggressive drive to recover ground rent from residents and property owners, a policy critics argue is being pursued with little regard for the state’s widespread infrastructure gaps.
