Yoruba Monarchs Rally Support for Enhanced Security Measures in the Southwest

In a bid to address growing security concerns and bolster regional stability, traditional rulers across the South-Western region of Nigeria have called for unified support for enhanced security measures. Led by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, the Yoruba monarchs convened at a one-day Yoruba Security Summit held at Ife Grand Resort, Ile-Ife.

The summit, attended by Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State and esteemed traditional rulers from various Yoruba communities, emphasized the imperative of cohesive action to combat escalating challenges. Notable figures present included the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III; Osemawe of Ondo, Oba Victor Kiladejo; and the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade, among others.

In a joint communique issued at the conclusion of the summit, the participants underscored the critical role of community support in addressing security threats. They expressed grave concern over what they described as “organised systematic attacks on traditional rulers and eminent sons and daughters of Yoruba land by suspected herders.”

The summit affirmed the necessity for the Yoruba race to assert control over their territories, including forests, homelands, and farmlands, citing the detrimental impact of herders’ attacks on food security in the South-West. The communique outlined key resolutions aimed at safeguarding the region and fostering development: unity in defense, preservation of traditional values, recognition of traditional leadership, empowerment of security agencies, and technological solutions.

The statements issued during the summit underscored the urgency of collective action in addressing security challenges, with a clear emphasis on community involvement and traditional leadership. The communique echoed the sentiments of many within the region, who have long clamored for proactive measures to safeguard lives and property amidst escalating threats.

Reacting to the resolutions, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State affirmed the government’s commitment to collaborating with traditional institutions and other stakeholders to implement robust security strategies. He reiterated the importance of synergy in tackling insecurity, pledging to prioritize the welfare and empowerment of security agencies tasked with maintaining law and order.
