‘Youths Learn Criminality from Parents and Leaders’, Says Peter Obi on International Anti-Corruption Day

In an address marking International Anti-Corruption Day, former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, emphasized the dire consequences of corruption on Nigeria’s democracy and development.

He articulated, “Corruption has become the greatest threat to our national existence, especially our democracy, peace, and progress.” He stressed the urgent need to combat corruption, calling for a comprehensive approach at all levels of governance.

Quoting the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, Obi lamented, “The huge percentage of Nigerian youths in cybercrime raises a critical question: where are the children learning such criminality from, if not from us the parents, especially we the leaders?”

Highlighting the impact of corruption on the nation’s reputation, Obi underlined its connection to economic decline. “The negative perception of Nigeria reflects the worsening economic situation, with foreign investors leaving and local businesses shutting down, resulting in massive job loss and increasing poverty,” he stated.

Expressing his commitment to a corruption-free Nigeria, Obi envisioned a nation promoting entrepreneurship, professionalism, and hard work.
