The Catholic Bishops of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province have criticized Chief Bola Tinubu’s reforms, stating they have failed to deliver the promised “renewed hope” to Nigerians.
In a communiqué issued at the end of their two-day meeting at Sacred Heart Pastoral/Retreat Centre, Orlu, the Bishops expressed concern over the increasing inflation, hunger, and anger in the country.
Signed by Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji and Most Rev. Augustine Echema, the communiqué highlighted the social and economic challenges facing Nigeria, attributing them to the administration’s ineffective reforms.
The Bishops noted that despite the government’s calls for citizens to endure the hard times, there is a lack of prudent spending by leaders at all levels.
The statement partly read, “Our nation, Nigeria, continues to face many social and economic challenges that are bringing untold hardship to our people.
“The reforms that were introduced at the inception of the current administration have not brought the renewed hope promised. Instead, inflation continues to skyrocket and hunger and anger continue to grow.
“Despite calls by the government for the people to sacrifice and bear patiently the hard times, there seems to be no corresponding example of prudent spending on the part of the leaders at all levels of government.
The Bishops also supported the ongoing national hunger protests, acknowledging the youths’ right to be angered by the nation’s deteriorating state.
They emphasized that good governance and socio-economic stability will remain elusive without a collective effort to strengthen political institutions.
Additionally, the Bishops urged Nigerian citizens to make necessary adjustments during these challenging times, including rejecting all forms of corruption.
