Earlier this week, a woman from Alabama, who has a unique congenital condition resulting in two uteri, gave birth to twin girls. Kelsey Hatcher and her husband Caleb became parents to Roxi Layla on Tuesday night and Rebel Laken on Wednesday morning at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital (UAB). The proud mother of five shared the news on social media.
Kelsey took to Instagram to announce, “Our miracle babies were born! They decided they were rare enough statistically that they should just go ahead and have their own birthdays too.” Kelsey’s condition of having a double uterus led to a unique pregnancy known as a dicavitary pregnancy, where she was carrying a baby in each uterus. This type of pregnancy is extremely rare, with a one-in-a million chance of happening.
Shweta Patel, Kelsey’s obstetrician, shared in a hospital news release, “I had already taken care of Kelsey through her third pregnancy and knew she had a double uterus, but that was only one baby — two babies in two uteri were a true medical surprise.” Given the unique nature of her pregnancy, Kelsey’s case was deemed high risk and she was induced at 39 weeks. After enduring labor for a total of 20 hours, the twin girls were born.

Richard Davis, the doctor who co-managed the pregnancy, stated that it is “safe to call the girls fraternal twins,” even though a typical twin pregnancy involves two babies in a single uterus. The delivery process was unique as well, with the first baby being delivered naturally, like Kelsey’s previous three children, while the second one was delivered via C-section. The medical team had prepared for three possible delivery scenarios: both babies delivered naturally, one baby delivered naturally and one via C-section, or a C-section for both.
Kelsey expressed her excitement on social media, saying, “I can’t wait to share the entire birth story with you guys! While we are all home now, we will take the time (to) bond, recover, and enjoy the holidays!”
