An Italian man named Filippo Ferlazzo was sentenced to 24 years in prison for the July 2022 murder of Alika Ogorchukwu, a Nigerian living in Italy.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the chairman of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission, revealed this in a statement on Thursday. Dabiri-Erewa applauded the Nigerian Mission in Rome for handling the issue and other Nigerian-related situations with diligence. She said, “I am glad that this case finally got justice. Like I always say, there have to be consequences for actions”.
Alika Ogorchukwu was attacked while hawking on July 29, 2022, in full daylight. With the use of Ogorchukwu’s crutches, the attacker battered the victim to death in front of multiple witnesses who chose not to step in. However, some of the spectators used their smartphones to take videos of the incident.
The event is said to have happened on Friday around 2 p.m. at Civitanova Marche’s main central thoroughfare in Italy. Paramedics arrived at the scene and discovered Ogorchukwu dead.
Filippo Ferlazzo was detained on July 30, 2022, on suspicion of killing Ogorchukwu and stealing his phone. According to the Italian Police, Ferlazzo allegedly beat Ogorchukwu after the latter asked Ferlazzo’s girlfriend to get him a handkerchief.
