Former Nigerian Head of State and one of the founding fathers of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Yakubu Gowon, has declined an invitation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with ECOWAS Commission, to address the crises currently affecting the regional body.
The press conference, scheduled to take place at the ECOWAS Commission Headquarters in Abuja, aimed to provide insights into the challenges faced by the regional body and explore potential lasting solutions.
The invitation was extended to Gowon to speak on the state of affairs in ECOWAS, particularly regarding coups and the recent threat of the Republic of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso to exit the organization.
The three military juntas in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger had announced their intention to withdraw from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). They claimed that the regional body has become a threat to its members, alleging that it is under the influence of foreign powers and has strayed from its founding principles.
Among the grievances expressed by the military leaders were allegations of inadequate support from ECOWAS in their fight against terrorism and insecurity.

Additionally, they accused the regional body of imposing illegal, inhumane, and irresponsible sanctions against them following coups.
ECOWAS has consistently called on the three countries to return to civilian rule, employing sanctions and denying plans for lengthy democratic transitions.
