Buhari Responsible for Current Hardship, Destroyed Nigeria’s Economy – Shehu Sani

Former Senator Sani Shehu, who once represented Kaduna Central in the Senate, asserted that Nigeria’s economy was ruined by former President Muhammadu Buhari, attributing the current economic challenges to his administration.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Sani noted that certain economic strategies being pursued by President Bola Tinubu, which have exacerbated economic difficulties, ought to have been executed during Buhari’s tenure.

He criticized Buhari for neglecting to implement these policies, leading to the country’s economic decline.

Sani said, “We must be very factual and realistic with ourselves; the problem we find ourselves today, originated, was engineered, fabricated and sustained by the Buhari administration.

“The Buhari administration, institutionally, fundamentally, destroyed the Nigerian economy,” he added.

Sani took on the responsibility for the current situation, highlighting that Tinubu had promised to implement the policies he had enacted during the campaign, thus affirming that Tinubu did not mislead Nigerians.

He said, “When Tinubu took over, he knows there is not going to be subsidy and to be realistic, he was very frank during his campaign. I am going to remove subsidy and whatever protest that will come out of it I will not back down’ and then people went ahead and voted for him, so he has not deceived Nigerians.

“Now he is in power, we are paying the price for the mistake of the past, for the failure of the past and for what we have refused to do in the past, so this is the reality,” he said.

Recall that in certain Nigerian states, citizens have engaged in street demonstrations to protest the economic difficulties resulting from some of Tinubu’s policies, notably the removal of petrol subsidies and the implementation of a unified foreign exchange rate.

On Tuesday, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) added its voice to the protest against hardship by organizing a nationwide action.
