Former Delta State gubernatorial candidate and Professor of Political Economy, Pat Utomi, has urged the President of Kenya, William Ruto, to engage constructively young citizens protesting against a controversial finance bill instead of killing them.
Recall that the demonstration, which was the third round of protests against the bill, claimed over eight protesters on Tuesday.
While reacting on X, Utom believes that in any sane country, if the youth disagree with a leadership style, the appropriate course of action is to bring them to the table for discussion, rather than attempting to enforce policies

“Ruto Ruto. I was rooting for you yesterday. Please please do not let hubris eat your lunch. Africa needs good news. If a whole generation disagrees with how you want to construct their future, talk with them. Shooting citizens is not a show of power it is a show of weakness. There is time to make amends. We need you to raise the banner of good governance. Africa is bleeding rivers. We need no oceans of blood that assume egos of tyrants,” Utomi tweeted.
Meanwhile, hours after people died protesting the passage of the Kenya’s controversial 2024 Finance bill, President William Ruto addressed the public, talking tough and describing the protest as “treasonous events.”
It was the President’s first address to the nation since protests began against a tax bill that proposed a second round of taxes in just under a year.
Despite the opposition to the bill, it passed the committee stage on Tuesday and will be sent to Ruto for assent.
