In a bid to address the scarcity of skilled workers and promote self-reliance, the Abia State government has announced plans to establish tuition-free schools across the state’s three senatorial zones.

These schools will offer courses such as solar power installation and maintenance, PoP, painting, masonry, and tiling, among others. Prince Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, affirmed that the initiative aims to equip locals with essential skills, reducing the need to import artisans from other regions.

Kanu emphasized the government’s commitment to nurturing a skilled workforce within Abia State, stating, “For quite a while, Abia has been lacking artisans. So, the state government wants to put an end to this shortage of skilled workers in the state.” Additionally, graduates from these programs will receive financial empowerment to kickstart their careers.

Furthermore, the government provided updates on various initiatives during a recent executive council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti. One significant development is the commencement of gas supply to the Geometric Power Plant in Aba, which began preparations for its upcoming commissioning. Gas supply for the plant is sourced from Owazza, marking a crucial step towards enhancing power infrastructure within the state.

Addressing concerns of traffic violations, particularly vehicles driving against traffic flow, the government reiterated its stance on enforcing discipline on the roads. The Commissioner for Information and Culture underscored the seriousness of the offense, labeling it as “serious indiscipline” and affirming the government’s resolve to curb such impunity. To this end, a task force will be established to address traffic violations effectively.

In the realm of environmental protection, the government remains vigilant in investigating pollution incidents. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna disclosed ongoing investigations into the contamination of the Aro Ajatakiri stream, with particular focus on waste disposal practices of companies in Umuahia. He assured the public that the government would release findings promptly, emphasizing its commitment to safeguarding environmental integrity.

Amidst these developments, the state government clarified its stance on reported federal initiatives. In response to queries regarding the distribution of released grains by the Federal Government, Commissioner Kanu stated, “I am not aware of any such issue.” This assertion underscores the need for clarity and verification regarding external initiatives affecting the state.

The Abia State government’s multifaceted approach to addressing societal challenges reflects a commitment to holistic development and governance. By prioritizing skill development, infrastructure enhancement, traffic discipline, and environmental protection, the government aims to foster sustainable progress and prosperity within the state.
