Alleged Bribery: Nigerians Blacklash Gov Fintiri After Donating 23 SUVs to Judges, Says Move Will ‘Strengthen Judiciary’

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has come under heavy criticism from Nigerians after announcing the donation of 23 brand-new Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to judicial officers in the state.

The governor said the move was part of his administration’s commitment to “strengthening the justice system in Adamawa.”

“I have today handed over 23 brand new SUVs to our judiciary officers as part of our unwavering commitment to strengthening the justice system in Adamawa State,” the governor said in a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account. “We remain focused on building institutions that work, and a judiciary that delivers justice without fear or favour.”

However, the gesture has sparked widespread outrage online, with many Nigerians accusing the governor of attempting to influence the judiciary through lavish gifts. Critics argue that such donations, though presented as institutional support, could compromise judicial independence and raise ethical concerns.

“Is this justice or bribery disguised as development?” one X user wrote. “No wonder justice is slow when politicians are the ones ‘strengthening’ the courts.”

Others pointed to the country’s worsening economic hardship, noting that while ordinary Nigerians struggle with inflation, insecurity, and lack of basic services, state funds are being used to gift luxury vehicles to privileged officials.

“Public schools and hospitals are crying for attention, yet governors are distributing SUVs like party favors,” another user commented.
