ECOWAS Runs to Nigeria’s Rescue with $2 Million Humanitarian Aid

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has provided Nigeria with nearly $2 million for humanitarian aid. This support was formally announced during a ceremony held in Abuja on Thursday, June 13, 2024.

The Nigerian Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation was responsible for distributing the funds, which were directed to the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Nigerian Red Cross Society.

Professor Fatou SOW SARR, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, handed over the cheques to the Federal Ministry at the launch of a flood assistance program. This event was attended by officials from the Nigerian Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the World Food Programme.

The Nigerian Red Cross received a cheque for $906,205. This funding aims to help 3,500 households in the states of Adamawa, Anambra, Oyo, Kebbi, Kogi, and Rivers. The funds will also be used to dig 12 wells, ensuring access to safe drinking water and reducing the risk of water-borne diseases in these communities.

Benson Agbro, Director of Disaster Management at the Nigerian Red Cross, said, “This agreement illustrates our shared commitment to humanitarian principles and the well-being of our citizens. It shows what we can achieve through collaboration and solidarity. Together, we are not just responding to a disaster, we are laying the foundations for a more resilient and prosperous future for our nation.”

Professor SARR,the ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, along with representatives from the Ministries of Humanitarian Affairs and Foreign Affairs, presented a cheque for one million dollars to Mr. Guy ADOUA, the Deputy National Director of the World Food Programme.

Mr. Adoua remarked, “This partnership will continue to provide essential food, nutrition, and resilience-building support to communities in Katsina and Sokoto States. It will also strengthen state government institutions and programs for greater sustainability.”
