The Enugu State government has sealed the premises of 16 businesses, including schools, hotels and consulting firms, for allegedly evading tax payments.

The action was taken on Friday by the State Internal Revenue Service (ES-IRS), which said the affected businesses had ignored several reminder letters from the government.

The chairman of the ES-IRS, Emmanuel Nnamani, said the organisation had to resort to the court order to seal the premises after the owners and management of the businesses failed to comply with the tax laws. He said the businesses owed the state millions of naira in unpaid taxes since 2015.

Nnamani said the low tax compliance rate in the state was affecting the government’s ability to provide amenities for the people. He cited the recent flag-off of 71 road projects in the state capital as an example of the people-oriented projects that the government needed funds to execute.

He appealed to the people to cooperate with the government and pay their taxes regularly, saying the Governor Peter Mbah-led administration had delivered over 200 per cent service delivery in the past seven months. He said the government was determined to develop the state with the internally generated revenue. #Enugu State
