Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has pledged deserving honours for late Nollywood actor Precious Ofurum, who tragically lost his life in a boat mishap in Asaba, Delta State. Ofurum, a Rivers indigene, was among the casualties of the accident, which also claimed the lives of other actors, including Junior Pope.
Governor Fubara assured members of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) and Nollywood practitioners of the state’s support during their visit to the Government House in Port Harcourt. Dr. George Nwaeke, representing the Governor, conveyed the assurance, expressing devastation upon learning of Ofurum’s involvement in the incident.
Offering condolences to the bereaved family, Governor Fubara hailed Ofurum’s patriotism and achievements, describing him as an exemplary Nigerian who chose to make a mark within the country. He emphasized the importance of recognizing Ofurum’s contributions, stating, “He was one of the heroes that Nigeria has ever produced.”
Highlighting the youth-friendly stance of his administration, Governor Fubara reiterated his commitment to supporting the bereaved family, emphasizing the Governor’s dedication to honouring the memory of Ofurum. “Even in death, I can assure you that the Governor will do honour to our departed son, Precious,” he affirmed.

Eric Stevenson, the Convener of the solidarity visit, recounted the tragic incident that occurred on April 10, 2024, when actors returning from a movie set encountered a boat mishap in Asaba. He expressed satisfaction with the Governor’s response and hoped for swift action from the state government to support the bereaved family.
With other states extending support to their affected citizens, Stevenson emphasized the need for Rivers State to similarly support Ofurum’s family. He conveyed gratitude for the Governor’s assurance and anticipated concrete actions from the government.
