Embattled Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has sparked ethnic tensions within the Nigerian Police following the demotion of northern and southern officers and the promotion of only Western officers.
A report has revealed that out of the 37 officers promoted under “special consideration,” 30 were allegedly of Yoruba origin — fuelling growing concerns that IGP Egbetokun is presiding over a regionally biased or “provincial” police leadership.
The development has sparked discontent across various police commands, particularly among officers who believe they were overlooked for promotion despite being qualified, allegedly due to ethnic considerations. #Egbetokun
On Monday evening, the police leadership, through its spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, who is also a beneficiary of the jaundiced promotion, confirmed that the officers would be decorated in the office of the IGP Egbetokun.
The police authorities, in their scheming, withheld the names of the 37 officers, releasing only the names of a northerner and a South-Easterner.
