Israeli Ambassador Alleges Iran of Working to Destabilise Nigeria

As Donald Trump makes a dramatic return to the White House as the 47th President of the United States, the Israeli government has expressed optimism that the U.S. will continue to offer robust support to Israel amid ongoing Middle Eastern conflicts.

Israeli officials have also raised concerns over Iran’s actions in West Africa, specifically accusing Iran of attempting to destabilize the region, including Nigeria.

Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, spoke on this during a recent event in Abuja commemorating the one-year anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led massacre of Israeli civilians.

During his presidency from 2017 to 2021, Trump was a strong ally to Israel, and his re-election has already sparked celebrations within Israeli government circles, including among officials like Ambassador Freeman.

They anticipate that the incoming administration will renew and possibly strengthen U.S. support. However, Freeman also expressed concern over rising insecurity in West Africa, which he attributes in part to alleged Iranian interference.

The Ambassador further claimed that Iran’s destabilizing influence is not confined to the Middle East and extends to efforts to disrupt peace and security in Nigeria.

Freeman highlighted that over a year after the Hamas attacks, 101 Israeli children, women, and elderly citizens are still being held hostage.

He expressed gratitude to those who have supported Israel during these challenges, notably its closest ally, the United States, and underscored Israel’s commitment to securing the release of all hostages and establishing new governance in Gaza.
