Amid Economic Downfall, Kano Assembly Passes N99bn Supplementary Budget

The Kano State House of Assembly has passed a supplementary budget of N99 billion following a third reading.

This move comes amid the ongoing economic downturn, as the state seeks to address pressing financial challenges and enhance public services.

The lawmakers passed the supplementary appropriation bill during plenary on Thursday.

On August 27, Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano, transmitted the supplementary budget proposal to the assembly.

A breakdown of the budget includes allocations of ₦33,761,174,555.64 for personnel costs, ₦34,492,888,103.44 for overhead expenses, and ₦30,969,440,940.80 for capital expenditure.

Addressing journalists after the passage of the budget, Aminu Sa’ad, chairman of the committee on appropriations, explained that 58 percent of the budget is earmarked for capital expenditure while 42 percent is for recurrent expenditure.

The lawmaker said the supplementary budget will cover the upcoming local government polls and payment of the new minimum wage.

However, Sa’ad added that the budget will also cover the running cost for the newly established ministries and vocational institutions as well as other government priority projects.
