Revealed: How Tinubu Approved N500m For Inauguration of New National Minimum Wage Committee

Bola Tinubu has sanctioned the allocation of N500 million for the establishment and initial funding of the 37-member Tripartite Committee on the New National Minimum Wage.

According to a missive dispatched to Tinubu by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and subsequently shared on X by @PIDOMNIGERIA (99% OPPRESSED), an initial requisition of N1 billion was put forth by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

However, Tinubu opted for a reduction by half, endorsing the commencement of committee operations with N500 million.

Kashim Shettima inaugurated the committee on January 30, 2024, entrusting them with the responsibility of determining a new minimum wage.

Entitled ‘Request For Approval Of Funds And Inauguration Of The Tripartite Committee On National Minimum Wage,’ the letter outlined the following requests:

“i. The release of the sum of One Billion Naira (N1,000,000,000.00) only for the above exercise. This has been scaled down from N1.8 Billion.

“ii. The 26th January, 2024 for the inauguration of the Committee. All relevant documents are hereby attached.

“2. The New Minimum Wage is expected to be ready by 1st April, 2024 according to Law.”

“3. Respectfully submitted M President’s consideration and approval Sir,” the letter concluded.

A handwritten response within the letter from Tinubu, directed the committee to trim their budget by 50% and initiate proceedings with the approved budget of N500 million.

“Start with N500 million first,” the response stated.

“The Minimum Wage Committee just allocated the maximum wage for themselves,” a former federal lawmaker, Shehu Sani said while commenting on the development via his X handle.
