Adil Rashid, 18, said that because of his schooling, he was unaware of British legislation and did not know that it was against the law for him to have intercourse with the girl.
“Although chronologically 18 years old, it is quite clear from the reports that you are very naive and immature when it comes to sexual matters,” Judge Michael Stokes said in handing Rashid a suspended sentence yesterday.
Earlier, Nottingham Crown Court heard that sentences for these kinds of offenses often range from four to seven years in jail.

After that, Rashid went straight from his house to a mosque to worship. The girl told a school friend about what had happened, and the friend told one of her teachers. The girl confessed, and the next week he was arrested.
Though he admitted to the police that he was aware the girl was thirteen, he said that he was first hesitant to have sex and eventually gave in after being tempted.
Earlier, the court heard that Rashid’s schooling at an Islamic institution in the UK—which isn’t allowed to be named for legal reasons—left him with “little experience of women.”
He admitted to a psychotherapist that he was unaware it was illegal to have sex with a 13-year-old after his arrest. The court heard that he didn’t realize it was against the law until a family member told him.
According to Rashid, he was taught in school that “women are no more worthy than a lollipop that has been dropped on the ground.” He made same assertion in numerous interviews with psychologists.
Defence attorney Laban Leake stated that reports indicated Rashid had a “degree of sexual naivety” when Judge Stokes stated Rashid “must have known it was illegal, unless he was going round with his eyes shut.”
It wouldn’t be incorrect to characterize the school he attended as a closed community, and in this case, his family environment reinforced this.It wouldn’t be a stretch to suggest that he was unaware that it was against the law to have sex with a 13-year-old girl.
But he said that the Muslim, Rashid knew what he was doing was wrong.
‘It was made clear to you at the school you attended that having sexual relations with a woman before marriage was contrary to the precepts of Islam,’ he said.
Addressing Rashid, the judge said: ‘I accept this was a case where the girl was quite willing to have sexual activity with you. But the law is there to protect young girls, even though they are perfectly happy to engage in sexual activity.’
