INFLATION: Nigerian Port Berthing Charges Over 1,200% Higher Than Ghana, Say Shipping Agencies

The Shipping Agencies, Clearing and Forwarding Employers Association (SACFEA) has urged the Federal Government to swiftly reduce taxes for shippers, warning that excessive port charges are pushing businesses away from Nigerian ports to neighboring countries.

At a press conference in Lagos on Friday, SACFEA Chairman, Boma Alabi (SAN), revealed that the cost of berthing an average cargo vessel in Nigeria has surged to approximately USD 200,000, following a recent 15% hike in marine service charges by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).

Alabi contrasted this with Ghana’s Tema Port, where the same service costs just USD 15,000—a staggering 1,233% difference.

She emphasized that ports in neighboring countries, including Cotonou and Lome, offer significantly lower berthing fees, making Nigerian ports increasingly uncompetitive.
