Catholic bishops in Nigeria expressed sorrow over the fact that a significant portion of Nigerians would be observing this year’s Easter amidst an atmosphere characterised by uncertainty, tension, and pessimism.
The clergymen issued a heartfelt plea, urging every Nigerian to cling to hope for brighter days ahead despite the prevailing challenges. They emphasized the imperative of steering away from the prevailing sense of despair and embracing a mindset of optimism amidst adversity.
Highlighting the importance of national unity and cohesion, the bishops underscored the necessity for all citizens to actively pursue the path of peace. They emphasized the urgent need to reject injustice, discrimination, bigotry, and fanaticism, which sow seeds of discord, disaffection, and disunity within society.

In a poignant Easter message conveyed by Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, Archbishop of Owerri and President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), the bishops reiterated their concerns over the prevailing circumstances. They bemoaned the fact that Nigerians would be observing Easter in the midst of a myriad of challenges.
Beyond the economic hardships that have inflicted considerable strain on the populace, with the prices of essential goods soaring beyond the reach of the most vulnerable, the bishops highlighted the alarming escalation of insecurity and kidnapping incidents across the nation, particularly in the Northern region.
