“Perform Your Roles Without Seeking Favors,” NBA urges judiciary workers

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ibadan branch, has advised judiciary workers in Oyo State to carry out their duties without soliciting anything from the public for the sake of justice.

This counsel was given on Wednesday during a legal outreach held in collaboration with the state branch of the Judiciary Staff Union Of Nigeria (JUSUN) as part of the activities marking the close of the association’s 2023 law week.

Speaking on behalf of the association, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Mr Kazim Gbadamosi emphasized that demanding money or inducements from the public could compromise justice and tarnish the judiciary’s reputation.

He cautioned against collaborating to promote injustice within the judiciary and urged strict adherence to the code of conduct for civil servants.

“We must not destroy the legal profession in an attempt to make extra money.

“Let’s not assist anybody to prepare affidavits but maintain strict adherence to the code of conduct for civil servants,” he said.

Gbadamosi specifically addressed JUSUN members in the probate section, urging them to refrain from presenting themselves as lawyers in the course of their duties.

He stressed the importance of respecting judicial officers, lawyers, and litigants while maintaining the integrity and sanctity of the judiciary by avoiding the procurement of fake documents and judgments.

“We should see them the way God has made them. Let’s respect one another too because respect is reciprocal; let’s jointly raise the standard of our means of livelihood.

“We should continue to do our best and be good in whatever we do. We should also put our faith in God and protect what we have,” he stated.

The NBA Ibadan branch Chairman, Mrs Folasade Aladeniyi, highlighted that the outreach aimed to foster collaboration among stakeholders for a standardized justice delivery system in the state.

She encouraged JUSUN members to report any lawyer engaging in misconduct, emphasizing the need to uphold professional ethics.

“Let’s all maintain the ethics of our profession in the discharge of our duties, as we want a just, corruption-free and standardised judiciary in Oyo State,” she disclosed.

In response, JUSUN Chairman in the state, Mr Saheed Amoo, pledged the union’s commitment to disseminating the information to its members and working in synergy with NBA.

He commended NBA for organizing the outreach, foreseeing strengthened collaboration that would lead to improved working conditions for both the union and NBA.
