Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has mourned the gruesome killings in Benue State, describing the tragedy as a stain on Nigeria’s conscience and a direct result of failed leadership.
While reacting to reports that over 200 people were killed in a single attack on Guma Local Government Area, Obi said the killings—targeting women, children, displaced persons, and even soldiers—reflect a deep national crisis that has gone unchecked for too long.
In a strongly worded statement posted on his verified X handle, Obi said, “This is not merely violence. It is a failure of leadership, a stain on our collective conscience.”

He criticised the federal and state governments for normalising mass killings, stressing that the duty to protect lives and property must never be negotiable.
According to him, when a government repeatedly fails to fulfil this obligation, the very foundation of the nation is in danger.
Obi declared that the situation in Benue now demands a national emergency and urged Nigerian leaders to move beyond “symbolic gestures” and deploy concrete action.

“Let your actions speak louder than visits or statements,” he said, adding that the survival of Nigerians should be treated as an urgent, deliberate, and uncompromised priority.
Expressing deep solidarity with the people of Benue, Obi stated, “Your pain is our pain. The blood of your loved ones cries out for justice.”
He concluded by affirming that a secure Benue is not just a regional demand but a national duty that Nigeria must rise to meet.
