A social commentator, @AbdulMahmud01, has called on U.S. President Donald Trump to release official records regarding Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s connection or non-connection to illicit drug trafficking in Chicago before considering any form of intervention in Nigeria.
Mahmud, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stated, “Before invading my country, Nigeria, Donald Trump, please release the classified documents on Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s connection or non-connection to illicit drug trafficking in Chicago. Thank you for your attention to this matter, Sir,” Mahmud wrote.
Tinubu emerged as Nigeria’s president following the 2023 general election. His political career has long been marred by controversy, including allegations of involvement in cocaine trafficking in the early 1990s.
In 1993, court records show that Tinubu forfeited $460,000 to the U.S. Government after authorities investigated him over alleged proceeds linked to narcotics operations.
The case, heard at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, did not result in a criminal conviction, but the forfeiture settlement was widely publicised.
In 2022, the same U.S. court released documents detailing his interactions with American law enforcement agencies during that period.
Tinubu and his associates have repeatedly denied wrongdoing, insisting that the forfeiture was a civil matter and not an admission of guilt.
Mahmud’s remarks follow a strongly worded statement by President Trump, who on Saturday threatened to halt U.S. support and potentially launch military action in Nigeria over what he described as “ongoing killings of Christians and failure of the government to protect religious minorities.”
Reacting to his post, @ceonigeria_ reacted, saying, “Very urgent and important!!!! It’s the ‘thank you for your attention to this matter’ for me. Trump style.”
Meanwhile, @Ekwu Afor urged a more direct approach, writing, “No need for the documents. Trump’s removal of Tinubu and APC from Aso Rock is the best option.”
Folarin Abiodun added, “I second this! Let the world know what the @FBI has on him. Enough is enough.”
