Cross River: Scammers Hack Governor’s Phone, Pose as Gov for Financial Assistance

Criminals successfully hacked the mobile number of Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, on Sunday morning using it to seek assistance.

The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Emmanuel Ogbeche, issued a statement cautioning the public about unsolicited messages purportedly from Governor Otu, soliciting financial assistance.

According to the statement, the public is strongly advised to disregard any such messages and not to fall victim to scam attempts.

The hackers, described as hi-tech criminals, breached one of the governor’s mobile numbers in the early hours of February 11, 2024. Subsequently, they utilized the compromised number to send out fraudulent requests.

The statement read, “The public is pleased advised to disregard any such messages purportedly from the Governor.

“One of the Governor’s mobile numbers was breached by hi-tech criminals in the early hours of Sunday, February 11, 2024.

“The hackers have gone on to utilise the breached number to advance their nefarious activities to try to scam unsuspecting individuals. Please, do not fall to such devious attempt.”

Governor Otu’s office has taken immediate action to secure the hacked number, and relevant security agencies are actively working to apprehend those responsible for this audacious act.
