Senator Abba Moro initiated the motion, emphasizing the urgent need to protect democracy against the erosion witnessed in Benue.
Lawmakers asserted that appointing Caretaker Committees as replacements is undemocratic and violates the constitution.
Senator Victor Umeh, seconding the motion, expressed concern over the persistent undermining of the local government system in Nigeria.
The Senate strongly condemned the arbitrary dissolution of democratically elected councils, urging Governor Hyacinth Alia to adhere to the rule of law.

Senate has no constitutional powers to withhold statutory allocation to any local Govt except if such LGC wasn’t duly created by constitutional provisions/processes. Military or unitary govt mentality, which is a weapon for state capture, has no place in Constitutional democracy, and must be jettisoned forthwith.
